For many years fans have been questioning what a catch is? It has been the NFL's most unclear rule for several years. This offseason the NFL's rule committee finally addressed this important issue. The new rule that will be implemented in the following season, states that for a catch to be completed, 3 things have to be done. If you click on the video below it will be explained.
As Al Riveron said in this statement the Dez infamous no-catch would indeed be a catch and the Cowboys would be just short of the goal-line. Now that we know that Dez's catch would have been a catch if the new catch rule was in place during this game, you have to think, what if Dez caught it?
So if Dez caught it and the refs didn't screw him over, the Cowboys would easily beat the Packers because the Packers had so little time left.
Then they would travel to Seattle and go against the best defense in the league. Although Seattle has the best defense in the league, the Cowboys would be too high-powered with Dez and Romo for Seattle's defense to stop. If the Cowboys can beat the Packers they can surely beat the Seahawks.
Finally, from here the Cowboys would travel to Arizona instead of the Seahawks and be part of Super Bowl 49. This would be the first time making the Super Bowl since 1996 for the Cowboys and they would be determined to win it against Tom Brady and the Pats. The Cowboys would overpower the Patriots' defense and repeatably score and the Patriots would never be able to catch up.
There we go. It's settled. If Dez caught it the Cowboys would win the Super Bowl. But, wait one second.
If Dez did indeed catch it and the Cowboys scored, the Packers would still have a little over 4 minutes to score a touchdown, so this game was far from over and considering that Aaron Rodgers is one of the best clutch QBs in the game there would have been a substantial chance that the Packers came out on top.
Just for the sake of it, let's just say that the Packers didn't score and the Cowboys advanced to go against Seattle. First of all, these Seahawks had the best defense in the NFL and even with the combo of Tony Romo and prime Dez Bryant it would be unlikely for the Cowboys to come out on top. It would be very hard, but if the Cowboys somehow, some way beat the Seahawks they would advance to face Tom Brady and the Pats.
The Cowboys could have beat the Seahawks and they could have beat the Packers but this is where it ends. There is no way that the New England Patriots could have lost to the Cowboys. Yes, the Cowboys had a high powered offense and Dez Bryant was having the best season of his entire career, but this Cowboys team didn't have a stellar defense, or a great quarterback.
To beat any team that boasts Tom Brady at quarterback you need a smart and ready defense, which the Cowboys definitely didn't have. If this hypothetical matchup really did take place, as much as I want to say that the Cowboys would win the Lombardi, the truth is, the Pats would rip the Cowboys apart both on the defensive and offensive side.
Now, that the scenario is being dug deeper into, you can clearly see that even if Dez "caught" it, the Cowboys would probably not be able to go far in this scenario anyway. Even if they managed to beat the Packers they would probably lose to the Seahawks and if they somehow won in Seattle they would be beaten by the Patriots.
Although, Dez Bryant did really catch it, you can now see that it may have not been as important as though after all.
